Wenatchee is located on the west side of the Columbia River; neighboring East Wenatchee, a separate town in Douglas County, is across the river on its eastern shore. East Wenatchee has the distinction of being the landing site of the Miss Veedol, the first plane to complete a non-stop, trans-Pacific flight. The flight began 41 hours earlier in Misawa, Japan, and the two cities have had a special relationship ever since. A Sister City Agreement was signed in 2001 between the mayor of Misawa and the mayor of East Wenatchee. Now, delegations from Misawa visit the area twice a year, once in the spring during the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival and again in the fall during the Wings & Wheels Festival.
